Artificial Turf Installation: Method and Quality-Control Guide

Even a high-quality artificial turf can fail early when installation is poor. A successful method combines an accepted substrate, coordinated roll plan, controlled bonding, even infill and documented quality checks. Process discipline matters more than installation speed.

1. Accept the substrate

Measure levels, falls, flatness, compaction and drainage outlets before laying. Remove loose material, sharp stones, standing water and out-of-tolerance low points. A signed substrate-acceptance record prevents later disputes.

2. Prepare the roll plan

Mark roll direction, line inlays, production batches and seams on a drawing. Keeping pile direction consistent reduces apparent colour variation. Avoid unnecessary seams in high-wear zones such as goalmouths and the centre.

3. Unroll, relax and cut

Open rolls on a clean base and allow them to relax according to the manufacturer’s method. Cut between stitch rows without damaging the backing. Excessive tension or looseness can create waves during temperature change.

4. Control seams and adhesive

• Seaming tape must be dry, clean and centred.
• Record adhesive ratio and open time.
• Keep fibres out of adhesive and maintain a closed joint.
• Do not open the surface to traffic before full cure.

5. Apply sand and performance infill

Spread dry infill in light, repeated passes and brush in crossing directions. Verify application by reference-area measurements rather than total bag count alone. Maintain the design infill level for fibre support and playing performance.

Final acceptance

Record seams, lines, infill, flatness, drainage, goal anchoring and perimeter equipment in a photographic checklist. Complete performance tests after the surface has stabilised. Handover the maintenance plan and batch information for spare turf, tape and adhesive.
