EPDM Playground Surfacing: Safety, Design and Installation Guide

An EPDM playground surface is a layered safety system, not simply a coloured rubber finish. Its thickness and construction must respond to the equipment's critical fall height, the base, drainage, climate, accessibility and expected traffic.

Start with equipment and fall zones

Record the critical fall height of each play element and map the required impact area around it. The shock-absorbing layer should then be designed and verified for those zones. One uniform thickness may be inefficient or insufficient when equipment heights vary.

Build the complete system

A typical wet-pour system includes a stable base, primer, recycled-rubber shock layer and coloured EPDM wearing course. The exact build-up depends on the approved test system. Changing granule size, binder ratio or layer thickness can change impact performance.

Drainage and details matter

Water must leave the surface and the underlying construction without creating ponds or frost damage. Edges, drains, inspection covers and transitions need secure detailing. Accessible routes should avoid abrupt changes in level and provide suitable width and firmness.

Installation controls

• Confirm base levels, strength, moisture and cleanliness.
• Use calibrated mixing ratios and record batch quantities.
• Control ambient temperature, rain risk and working time.
• Measure each layer rather than relying on total thickness.
• Protect the area until full cure and final inspection.

Acceptance and maintenance

Visual quality alone does not prove safety. Specify field testing where required, together with thickness records, material certificates and repair procedures. Routine care should cover debris removal, drainage cleaning, edge inspection and prompt repair of cuts or loose areas.
