Selecting Construction Materials for Gulf Climates: 8 Criteria
Evaluate heat, UV, humidity, salt, sand, thermal movement, storage and maintainability before approving Gulf construction materials.
Products that perform in a mild climate may age quickly under Gulf heat, ultraviolet radiation, humidity, salt and sand. Approval should combine laboratory data with the actual exposure, installation method, storage conditions and maintenance capability of the project.
1. Service temperature
Review surface temperature, not only air temperature. Dark roofs, façades and external floors can become much hotter than the weather report. Check operating limits, softening, dimensional movement and performance after thermal cycling.
2. UV and colour stability
Request relevant accelerated-weathering data for exposed polymers, coatings, sealants and membranes. Colour change may be cosmetic, while loss of tensile or adhesion performance can become a functional failure.
3. Humidity and condensation
High humidity affects curing, corrosion and concealed condensation. Specify compatible primers, vapour control and application windows. Air-conditioned interiors can create condensation where warm humid air meets cold components.
4. Salt exposure
Coastal projects require attention to metal grade, coating system, cut-edge protection, fasteners and maintenance access. Salt carried by air can affect sites beyond the immediate shoreline.
5. Sand and abrasion
Wind-blown sand abrades coatings, blocks drainage and enters moving equipment. Review cleanability, filter access and replaceable wearing components.
6. Thermal movement
Allow for expansion through joints, flexible connections and compatible sealants. Long façades, pipes and external floors need project-specific movement calculations.
7. Transport and storage
Containers, port yards and unconditioned stores may exceed recommended limits. Define packaging, stacking, shelf life and temperature-controlled storage before shipment.
8. Local maintenance
Confirm that cleaners, repair kits, spare parts and trained applicators will be available. Compare bids using compliance documents, samples, warranty conditions and life-cycle cost rather than brand name alone.
